I recently discovered threads on Gearslutz discussing the potential benefits of using an in-line signal booster before a prosumer grade preamp such as on the Zoom H6 digital recorder. Two examples are the Cloud Microphones Cloudlifter and the Triton Audio FetHead. As I understand it, this device boosts the mic signal by 20db or so, which helps lower the noise floor for ribbon and dynamic mics Hey all - in this video I take a look at the Cloudlifter CL-1 vs the Triton Audio Fethead. Both of these devices do the same thing...slightly differently. If.. Re: fethead vs cloudlifter CL1 by rec-tec » Mon Jul 14, 2014 8:55 pm done a bit of vox recording with the fethead and a bog standard sm57 and the results are a very intimate sound. really breathes new life into this old workhors What the CloudLifter and other devices do is provide good clean gain. Dynamic mics like a lot of gain compared to condenser mics for example. Some mics, the Shure SM7b is always held out as an example, require a lot of gain. If you aren't getting enough clean gain to drive your mic, a CloudLifter or FetHead can provide 25-27 dB of additional gain Podcaster. I run my SM7B through a Fethead and into the Scarlett Solo 2nd Generation. Very happy with the sound quality. I've never used a Cloudlifter though I've heard they're good too. 1. level 2. We recommend the FetHead in-line preamp from Triton Audio. It's cheaper than the Cloudlifter, and is designed to improve signal to noise ratio and provide +29dB gain. It's also really small and allows for a minimal and stream-lined cable setup. Yes, that's right, it offers more gain for less cash. That works for us Thanx for the A2A Haven. That combination should give you enough headroom for sure. The Shure SM7B is a dynamic microphone that is infamous for being low output, but an excellent vocal and instrument mic. Most of Michael Jackson's vocals were reco.. Royer SF-12 with Fetheads vs. Royer SF-24: I wonder how the Royer SF-24 active stereo ribbon would compare to the passive Royer SF-12 run through FetHead or Cloudlifter impedance matching preamps? Does anybody have experience of comparing first hand? Is SF24 quieter? Better sounding? Or maybe not? Comments very much appreciated
If you decide to still get an inline mic booster the Triton FetHead is also worth considering and a bit more budget friendly than the Cloudlifter. I use a FetHead with an SM7b, RE20, and a couple other low output dynamic mics as well a cheap MXL ribbon mic. It works well and gives a clean quiet boost Rode PodMic vs Rode Procaster No more ambient noise with Cloudlifter or FetHead? (audio myth debunked Shure SM58, Shure SM57 - Duration: 11:43. The Enthusiasm Project 26,289. Or they buy a Fethead / Cloudlifter CL-1, an inline gain booster that uses the phantom power from your interface to add +25dB of gain. The DBX is the better buy, it's $50 more but you get a 60dB preamp with a compressor, de-esser, exciter, expander/gate. Last edited: Feb 13, 2019
A few years back I heard about in-line mic level boosters like the Cloudlifter, the FetHead and others. My ears pricked up and I read favourable reviews, but the reviewers were using prosumer preamps where the added gain from an in-line booster would almost certainly deliver better results than running the preamp flat out The cartridges the SM57 and SM48 use are different, but the SM48 without the transformer purportedly has similar characteristics of the SM57 with the transformer removed, that of a crisper high end. The output of the SM48 is 1.3 mV/Pa, so it's down around what the SM7B's output is and would likely benefit from an inline FetHead or Cloudlifter
The FetHead from TritonAudio is a low-noise, in-line microphone preamplifier that provides improved sound for ribbon and dynamic microphones. The electronics are housed in a metal chassis with a balanced 3-pin female XLR input and a balanced 3-pin male XLR output. It is suitable for use at home, in the studio, on tour, and more Big vs Small wind covers: I like the SM7B for Streaming and VO tasks, especially in the summer when you must keep the AC on. The Triton Fethead paired with an SM7B will sound as good as the Cloudlifer, yet it is cheaper and more practical in many ways. TIP: You can also connect the Fethead on the Preamp side The TRITON AUDIO FetHead in-Line Microphone Preamp works perfectly boosting db by 15db to 20db, Sound Quality is perfect. It's helping my new EV-320 dynamic microphone, both are now connected to RodeCaster Pro audio interface. Good gain boosts with NO noticeable noise. I could not be happier with this FetHead in-line XLR preamp One of the first questions that people have when they setup their Shure SM7B is Does the SM7B need 48v of Phantom Power. There are two different answers to this question, depending on your setup. Quick Answer: You do not need 48v of phantom power for the Shure SM7B unless you are using an inline preamp like a CloudLifter, Fethead, Dynamite, etc A Shure SM57 or SM58 for instance, sounds more responsive over a broader frequency range. When mated with a high-end dynamic microphone like a Sennheiser MD441, or Shure SM7 FetHead really shines. Ribbon microphones benefit greatly too because of a much better impedance match, which lessens the load on the microphone, thus giving it better.
Shure SM57. Many engineers call this the desert island microphone. It can record pretty much anything you put in front of it and at a good quality. It couples nicely with a Cloudlifter CL-1 or CL-2, Radial McBoost, Triton Audio FetHead or the Cathedral Pipes Durham. Michael Joly Microphones So I went online and bought a FETHEAD preamp (similar to a cloudlifter but smaller and about $100 less - same circuitry). With the FETHEAD I was able to reduce the gain on the SM57 to 6 out of 10 and with 7B I could cut it to 7 out of 10 - but man, with the clean boost from the fethead and the reduced gain, the SM57 came alive Keep in mind, these gain settings are with a Cloud lifter or Fethead. Without the inline signal boost I needed 9 out of 10 with the SM57 vs 7 out of 10 with the 935. This mic is a winner on all fronts. For vocalists it's renowned but it's also just fantastic for those of us who simply record spoken word. GET IT - You wont be sorry

If you're buying the fethead or cloudlifter to lower your noise floor, you will have to determine if 4dB of noise is worth $100 - $150. I should also point out that the 18i20 has an Equivalent Input Noise of -128dBA, so if the EIN of your interface is lower, for example -130dBA, the benefit would be less noticeable (about a 2dB improvement of. The Rode Procaster appears to have a sensitivity of 1.6mv/PA, which the same as an SM57, so not quite as bad as the SM7b at 1.12mv/PA. The Cloudlifter or a similar device such as the Fethead would certainly give a boost of the signal and reduce the need for the interface gain to be set at max The SM7b is far too quiet without the Fethead, with it, its the better sounding of the 2 on the male vocalist I record the most - the Stealth sounds a bit 'hard' and even in its dark setting is a bit brash to my ears, although I would say the singer in question is quite harsh in the 4-5K regio The five mikes are a Shure SM57, Audix I5, Sennheiser E609, MXL R40 ribbon and a MXL Guitar Cube (condenser). so you might want to invest in a Fethead or Cloudlifter (both are inline preamp boosters) if you're preamps don't have a lot of gain or headroom. I am associated with Audix, so I am biased. What I like about the I5 vs 57 is. the. In summary, as great as the Procaster is, it's much better if you have (or plan to acquire) a Cloudlifter or FetHead. Whilst some of the interfaces included below can provide a good amount of gain, adding a mic activator to your setup will provide the clean gain needed to let the preamps of your interface perform at their best and this is the.

Fathead + SM57 is a winning combination, and a fraction of the cost of a $1200 Royer. Each provides a complimentary emphasis to the other, giving a nice full range sound. Like others said, watch the phase. Align the ribbon element with the diaphragm of the 57 the same distance from the grill cloth
I'm able to drive my SM57 clean at 9 of 10, the SSL has a 62dB of preamp gain, vs 42bD on the Scarlett 2i2 I believe. This should also be able to drive the SM7B without a Cloudlifter / FetHead. I would give this five stars if it had the following. Podcasting Basics, Part 1: Voice Recording Gear. If used on quieter acoustic guitars and gentle vocals, a preamp offering 65dB gain or more would be helpful, but an inline gain stage (like a Cloudlifter or FetHead) could also be used if necessary. At 100Ω, the nominal output impedance of the R-10 is lower than most microphones, which are typically either 150 or 200 Ω
